Forest School

At Lantern Lane Primary & Nursery School, we believe that some of the most memorable and valuable learning experiences take place outdoors. Our Forest School provision gives children the opportunity to explore, discover and learn in natural environments, developing confidence, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors.

Forest School is a child-centred approach to learning that encourages children to take supported risks, solve problems, work collaboratively and build independence through hands-on experiences in nature.

Our Forest School Environments

We are fortunate to have access to two wonderful outdoor learning spaces.

Our on-site Forest School area provides a safe and stimulating environment where children can explore and learn. Features include:

  • Hammocks for relaxation and reflection
  • A sheltered learning area for all-weather activities
  • A log circle for group discussions, storytelling and shared experiences
  • A mud kitchen for imaginative and creative play
  • Open green space for exploration and outdoor learning

Children also benefit from visits to the larger wooded area at Meadow Park, where they can experience a richer natural environment, observe seasonal changes and develop a deeper connection with the natural world.

Forest School Across the School

Every child has the opportunity to experience Forest School during their time at Lantern Lane. Currently, children in:

  • Reception
  • Year 1/2
  • Year 3

take part in a dedicated term of Forest School learning.

Sessions are carefully planned to build confidence, develop practical skills and encourage curiosity, while still allowing children the freedom to follow their interests and explore their environment.

Additional Support Through Forest School

Alongside whole-class provision, we also offer Forest School sessions for smaller groups of children who may benefit from additional opportunities to develop wellbeing, confidence, friendships, communication skills or emotional regulation.

The nurturing and inclusive nature of Forest School often provides children with a different environment in which to thrive, succeed and build positive relationships.

The Benefits of Forest School

Through Forest School, children develop:

  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Independence and responsibility
  • Creativity and imagination
  • Physical coordination and motor skills
  • Respect for nature and the environment

Our Commitment

Forest School is an important part of our commitment to educating the whole child. By providing regular opportunities to learn and play outdoors, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities needed to flourish both in school and beyond.

Whether they are building a den, exploring woodland habitats, gathering around the log circle or simply enjoying time in nature, our Forest School experiences help children develop a sense of adventure, belonging and wellbeing that will stay with them for years to come.
